Graphic Design Vs Web Design

Clients would ask people offering online services to come up with a graphic design. Some customers would ask Web designers to create a web design. Are these two concepts similar? What are their distinctions? This article simplifies Graphic Design from Web design and points out the distinctions between the two.

Web design is the process of designing a website. Web design is a profession practiced by an admirable number of professionals, be they in any part of the world. Graphic design makes up a part of the web design. They may consist of creation and design of the header or the background whereas web design includes the whole site, the big picture.

It is also prudent to point out that graphic design has existed way before the online phenomenon. It is not limited to creations online. It has been practiced in advertisements, in print or in publication and now in the internet. Graphic Design is a business oriented approach combined with an artistic flair to attract the attention of the targeted consumer. Through the use of visual communication, the owner is better able to convey his sentiments whether they may be purely commercial, cause oriented or even just personal blogging.

A couple of basic tips for both Graphic Designers and Web designers:

1. Know your target audience. Are you creating a product that caters to the interest of girls? What is the age bracket to which it caters too? Is it a make up brand to decrease the wrinkle lines? What age group and nationality does the product address? Or if you are creating a web site for an author of sci-fi books, what kind of readers does the author usually have as fans?

2. After figuring out your intended market, make a web site or graphic design that will appeal to them and not you. So research not only on the demographics of your client’s market but also on their tastes and what they find attractive and appealing.

3. Remember that your art must not be abstract and difficult to understand. It must convey the message to the readers and surfers that you have a product and company, that they’re great and they should use their services or buy them. The design should be such that when the readers or surfers see the color, the design, they immediately think of the company of your client.

4. Lastly, when you do put the text in your designs. Make sure they are readable. The design would be futile and useless if the texts themselves are intelligible and unclear.

That page in the magazine or newspaper that jumps out at you, the website with brightly colored title, animated photographs and interactive elements. These are the works of graphic designers – the talented individuals whose job it is to visually convey messages. Entry to the field typically requires a bachelors degree in graphic design.

Many colleges, universities and design schools offer bachelors degrees in graphic design. In working toward such a degree, students are likely to take courses such as principles of design, studio art, commercial graphics production and website design. Liberal arts courses in history, art, writing, business, cultural studies and marketing are among those that the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports can help prospective professionals in their work.

Some talented individuals work for publishing companies, while others might work for advertising agencies. Students who prefer instead to work toward associate degree or certificate programs in this field might be able to put the technical skills they acquire to use while working as an assistant to a graphic designer or in jobs where only those technical skills are needed, the Bureau of Labor Statistics suggests. In addition to community colleges, students might find associate degree and certificate programs in design available through two- and three-year professional schools.

Students might be good candidates for bachelor degrees in this area in instances where they are creative, boast communication and problem-solving skills and are at ease with computer graphics and design software. Even after obtaining a degree in graphics, graduates might have to stay up to date with new and updated software programs.

Students who are seeking schools that offer degrees in design might look toward those that are accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design. It’s likely, at any college, university or professional school, however, that students won’t receive formal entry to the bachelors degree program until after a year of art and design courses are completed. Students can complete these courses in high school, if they plan ahead.

College, university and professional school applicants might also have to provide samples of their work as a means of demonstrating their artistic talents. When seeking work in the field of graphics, prospective designers might carry a portfolio showcasing some of their work. In May 2008, those in this field earned median annual salaries of $42,400, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The Bureau anticipates that employment growth for graphic designers into 2018 is to be about 13 percent, which is as fast as the average for all occupations. Advertisers and computer design companies are expected to increase the demand for graphic designers. Those with website design and animation experience are expected to enjoy the most promising job prospects in this competitive field, the BLS notes. Interactive media projects, including those for websites and mobile telephones, also are expected to increase the demand for designers with website design and animation experience, according to the Bureau.
